I am an engineer with a Bachelors in Nuclear Power Engineering from Purdue University who was greatly impacted by teachers. First, my father was a 4th grade teacher whose dedication to learning and to his students inspired me. Second, my English teachers taught me a love for reading which translated into a discovery and interest in nuclear power, after reading a fascinating book. Third, my math and science teachers, as well as a guidance counselor, directed me into the field of Engineering. After college, I began my 33-year career in the nuclear industry at the Millstone Nuclear Power Plant in Waterford and I am currently an Engineer Auditor & Assessor at Electric Boat in Groton.
During a brief “retirement” in the Covid years, I was accepted into the Alternate Route to Certification (ARC) program offered by the CT Office of Higher Education. This intensive accelerated teacher certification program enables professionals to make the transition to a teaching career in their particular area of interest and expertise. As a result, I maintain an active State of CT Teaching Certificate for Grades 7-12 Physics. I completed and greatly enjoyed my student teaching assignment at Middletown High School in 2022. Previous to this, I was a “Home Bound” Tutor at Glastonbury High School in Math and Science. Although I don’t have children in the EH school system, I am familiar with the educational environment and the challenges teachers face every day. I have also encouraged nieces and nephews in their respective educational pathways, so I know firsthand what it’s like to teach and challenge students to the next level in order for them to reach their full potential.
Alongside my career, I have been active with Toastmasters, an international organization that enables one to enhance their public speaking abilities and leadership skills. Over the years I have also been involved in leadership and teaching in my local church. In my free time I enjoy gardening, hiking, biking, traveling and antiquing.
My vision is to provide leadership through the EH Board of Education to empower the student, the parent and the teacher to join in a strong partnership, enabling the student to become well prepared to pursue any career post-graduation. This requires facilitating changes in order to provide the springboard for a great results-focused education at a reasonable cost, so that each student has the foundational skills, knowledge and critical thinking skills to be successful.
It is not inexpensive to provide an excellent education to each student, but it doesn’t have to be expensive to the taxpayer either. East Hampton spends upwards of $20K per student per year for average or slightly above average performance. Who wants to settle for being average in CT when CT doesn’t even rank in the top 30% of 50 states in Math and Reading Proficiency? I believe our students deserve better and our community can do MUCH better! I am listening and I believe in US!
